SACRAMENTO, Calif --

The Sacramento Metro Fire District identified the captain who was severely burned while battling to save a citizen's home during the Jackson Highway fire Tuesday, officials said.

Capt. Steven Eggiman, 46 -- a firefighter since 1988-- is currently recovering in the burn unit at UC Davis Medical Center.

He is being treated for third-degree burns to his hands, and second-degree burns to his forearms and nose, officials said.

"As the mother of a firefighter, it's always been in the back of my mind that I could someday receive a phone call that my son had been injured or killed. I am so thankful and relieved that he survived and is going to recover," Eggiman's mother said.

Sac Metro Fire Chief Don Mette said Eggiman's "selfless actions at the Jackson Highway incident were in the highest traditions of the fire service to serve and protect."
