A neighbor said he tried to rescue the couple but the smoke was too thick.

Two people died in an early-morning house fire on Cleveland's west side.

Cleveland arson investigators said the blaze started at about 1 a.m. at the home on Viola Avenue near West 140th Street.

Kelly Klein, 22, and her boyfriend, Scott Chichy, 21, were killed.

Investigators said the fire started in the kitchen and was confined to that room. The couple was found in the bedroom. Chichy died at the scene and Klein died an hour later at Fairview Hospital of smoke inhalation.

Klein's 2-year-old daughter was not home at the time of the fire. She was staying with her father.

A neighbor said he tried to rescue the couple but the smoke was too thick.

The home did not have a working smoke detector. Arson investigators will look into the fire.
