WASHINGTON --

D.C. firefighters, nurses and other staff members at Washington Hospital Center conducted their first training exercise together Tuesday.

As part of the drill, firefighters responded to a burning building from which they had to remove a patient suffering from severe burns. The firefighters and an emergency medical services team began their treatment of the patient while a MedSTAR helicopter arrived at the scene.

The patient was put on board the helicopter, and a flight nurse and a paramedic continued caring for the patient as the helicopter flew back to the Washington Hospital Center.

Hospital officials said the drill went well and they hope to do more joint exercises with D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services in the future.
