One man is critically injured and 30 others were evacuated after a fire at an Independence apartment complex on Thursday morning. Firefighters were called to the Heritage Park Apartments shortly after 7 a.m. Fire officials said the fire started in the kitchen of a third-floor apartment in the 18-unit building. Three units sustained damage in the fire. "As we were standing over here away from it, we saw a big plume of white smoke come from this left side," Todd Chase said. Taniel Snedicor was transported to University Hospital, where he's listed in critical condition. Firemen found him on the floor of his apartment after kicking the door open to get inside. "Got the patient out, our paramedics worked on him all the way to the hospital," Fire Chief Richard Messingschlager said. About 30 people were displaced by the fire and are being helped by the American Red Cross. Officials said many, but not all of the residents would probably be able to return to their apartments. No cause of the fire has been determined so far.
