FRANKFORT SPRINGS, Pa. --

A 70-year-old man was injured when he somehow fell into a septic tank in Frankfort Springs, Beaver County.

It happened at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday on Route 18, behind County Line Pizza.

Rescue crews were eventually able to free the man, who fell head first into the empty tank. He was flown by helicopter to UPMC Presby.

Police said the man spent about an hour in the hole before he was rescued.

Firefighters said it was the first time they had to rescue someone from a septic tank.

"One person, myself, was lowered down into the hole using a tripod system," said Capt. J.T. Pennington of the Aliquippa Fire Department. "And once inside the hole, we secured him to a harness, and we retrieved him the same way we entered the hole, using the tripod."

The man complained of head pain as he was loaded onto a medical helicopter. His name and condition are not known at this time.
