HOUSTON --

A firefighter rescued a man from his burning home early Monday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Houston firefighters responded to the blaze at the Water Song Apartments on Westheimer Road near South Kirkwood Drive at about 12:45 a.m.

Crews had a hard time finding which unit was on fire. They followed the scent of the smoke and heard a man screaming.

"We heard the gentleman hollering," firefighter Wesley Peschel said. "I kicked the door in and he was in approximately 10 to 12 feet in the room. I just grabbed him and brought him out."

The man, who was barely conscious, was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The fire was contained to the man's unit, but neighboring apartments sustained some smoke damage.

Investigators said the blaze may have started while the man was cooking in the kitchen. The exact cause of the fire is under investigation.
