BOSTON --

Nearly two weeks after two Boston firefighters lost their lives battling a restaurant blaze, there is now a lasting tribute to all fallen state firefighters. It was unveiled on the Sept. 11 anniversary, a day many firefighters lost their lives in the terrorist attacks.

NewsCenter 5's Mary Saladna reported that the memorial is a fitting tribute to the men and women who have paid the ultimate price just by doing their jobs.

To the mournful strains of bagpipes, officials dedicated the large bronze statue depicting firefighters in action at the Statehouse.

"Every year on this day, we are called to remember among the losses of Sept. 11, the many brave firefighters who gave their lives rushing into harm's way for the rest of us. We were tragically reminded of these risks and this heroism just two weeks ago with the loss of Paul Cahill and Warren Payne of Engine 30 and Ladder 25 and the injuries of the others by their sides," Gov. Deval Patrick said.

"Together this evening we bless this sacred and inspiring memorial to those who have fallen in the line of duty. To all whose names are engraved forever in the stones that make hallowed this holy ground," Rev. Daniel Mahoney said.

"Gracious God, bless and make holy this place, and allow it to always be an outward and visible sign of our dedication, love and gratitude," the Rev. Lawrence Provenzano said.

The statue is 11 feet high and weighs 3,000 pounds. It took nine months to design but more than nine years to raise the money and political backing to erect it.
