Former Ind. Firefighter Gets 62 Years for Molestation

It was the second time he was convicted of molestation.

A former Lawrence firefighter was sentenced Wednesday to 62 years in prison for molesting a teenage member of his family -- the second molestation case in which he was convicted or pleaded guilty.

A jury this month found Michael D. Kopp guilty of child molestation. Authorities said Kopp molested a relative for several years at Kopp's home on Indianapolis' northeast side, starting in 1997 when the relative was 13.

Kopp previously pleaded guilty to molesting a teenage relative in July 1993 -- about two years before he joined the Lawrence Fire Department. He successfully petitioned a court to reduce his 1993 conviction from a felony to a misdemeanor, and when he applied to work at LFD, he didn't mention the 1993 molestation case, authorities said.

Kopp was charged in the latest case in February.
