EAST CHICAGO, Ind. --

A woman and a young boy were killed and several others were injured Friday in a fire that tore through an East Chicago, Ind., apartment building, officials said Saturday.

Firefighters and emergency crews were called to a fire in a two-story apartment building in the 1300 block of East Columbus Drive about 8 p.m. Friday, East Chicago Fire Department District Chief John Edwards said.

Two people -- a 39-year-old woman and 9-year-old boy -- were killed and several others were injured in the blaze, Edwards said.

The woman and boy were identified as Crystal Thompson and Ricardo Mathis, according to the Lake County, Ind., coroners office. Thompson and Mathis died in a house fire at 1313 E. Columbus Drive, the coroners office said.

Mathis and Thompson's relationship is unknown as of 9:45 a.m., according to the coroner's office. Autopsies are scheduled for later Saturday.

The several other people injured in the fire were taken to area hospitals, Edwards said. Their conditions were not immediately available.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to Edwards, who could not confirm reports that a faulty generator ignited the blaze.
