Illinois Firefighter Dies after Fire

The City of Carbondale Fire Department is preparing to bury one of its own.

Firefighter Dana MacCrimmon. 45, became ill after she responded to a fire call on Aug. 10 at 10:59 p.m. After returning to the station, she was transported to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale and died at 2:20 p.m., Aug. 11.

She was the department's fire education specialist, and anually taught area fifth graders the importance of safety. "She was a great, great person, committed to fire prevention, and enjoyed showing our safety trailer," said Kathy Haldeman, administrative secretary.

But, her love of the fire service and education extended beyond her station duties. MacCrimmon also was active with the Southern Illinois Camp for Burned Children.

City flags are flying a half-staff in her memory. She is the first line-of-duty death in the City of Carbondale Fire Dept.

Funeral Information

Funeral services for firefighter MacCrimmon will be held Aug. 16 at 11:00 a.m., at the Carbondale Civic Center, 200 South Illinois Avenue, Carbondale, IL.

Friends may call from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m., Aug. 15 at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale and from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m., Wednesday at the Carbondale Civic Center.

A firefighter walk through will be held at 7:45 p.m. Aug. 15 at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale. Personnnel who wish to participate are asked to gather at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m.
