KANSAS CITY, Mo. --

Three firefighters were injured Monday evening when they responded to a car wreck on the city's east side.

Officials said the firefighters were the first to respond to a wreck on Interstate 435 near East Truman Road.

Police said a woman who is six months pregnant was driving a car in the southbound lanes when she lost a tire and spun into the median.

The driver of a white SUV came along and tried to avoid hitting the motorist assist truck, but the SUV ended up on the grass in the median and hit the firefighters and the pregnant woman, police said.

Four people were taken to hospitals. The Fire Department said the injured firefighters are doing well.

The SUV driver stopped after hitting the four.

The incident is under investigation.
