ST. MICHAEL'S, Md. --

One person is dead and two missing after flames ripped through a 6,400-square-foot on the Chesapeake Bay early Saturday.

The occupants of the house on Arcadia Shores Road in Talbot County were reported to have been in their late teens and early 20s, fire officials said.

Six people were in the house when the fire broke out about 2 a.m. Three said they were alerted by fire alarms and escaped.

Police said Matthew and Margaret Fitzgerald owned the home. Damage exceeded $500,000, fire officials said.

Firefighters remained on the scene Saturday afternoon, searching for the two missing occupants.

A team of investigators from the state fire marshal's office, state police and the Talbot Sheriff's Office are trying to determine what sparked the blaze.
