Florida Firefighters Find Body While Battling Brush Fire

According to witnesses, the victim was a homeless man who lived in a tent in the same area.

Firefighters battling a Palm Bay brush fire Sunday night discovered a man's body.

Palm Bay Fire Rescue crews responded to a reported brush fire in a wooded area adjacent to 1155 Malabar Road behind the Interchange Square shopping center just after 10 p.m. and discovered the body of a white man within the burn area, according to officials.

Police are conducting a death investigation.

According to witnesses, the victim was a homeless man who lived in a tent in the same area, Palm Bay authorities said.

Homicide investigators are working to determine the cause of death.

No other information about the victim was known.

The fire encompassed an area about 30 feet by 30 feet and appeared to be a campsite, a Palm Bay official said.

The State Fire Marshall's Office has been notified as part of routine procedure encompassing a fire-related death.
