The woman's family had called for help after it became evident that the baby was coming.

A "big baby" girl was born in Oceanside Saturday, earlier than expected and with a little help from firefighters.

Firefighters were called to the 500 block of Canyon Drive at about 10 a.m. and found the newborn's mother giving birth to the child, firefighter Steven Choi said. The woman's family had called for help after it became evident that the baby was coming and there was no time to get to a hospital.

Firefighters finished the delivery and transported the mother and healthy child to Tri-City Medical Center, Choi said. Mother and baby are both well. Choi said she was "a big baby," although he did not know specific details.
