Mississippi Firefighters Receive Pay Raise

Sept. 27, 2006
Jackson city employees havenÂ’t had a pay raise since January 2005.

Jackson city employees havent had a pay raise since January 2005.

But that changed on Tuesday when the City Council approved a $500 raise for all fulltime employees.

Firefighters are expected to get a $30 to $50 extra each month. The increase will be based on their tenure with the city.

The rate for firefighters is different because they belong to the union.

Council members said the pay raises are long overdue.

We appreciate you all and we don't have the opportunity to say thank you often. We wish it could be more but we did this time the best we could do, said Margaret Barrett-Simon, who represents Ward 7.

City workers will also save money on their health insurance this year. The city has absorbed the cost increase.

Pay raises will become effective Oct. 1.
