Two battalion chiefs at the Boone County Fire Protection District were relieved of their duties yesterday, just two weeks after they spoke out against administrators at the district and Fire Chief Steve Paulsell.


Two battalion chiefs at the Boone County Fire Protection District were relieved of their duties yesterday, just two weeks after they spoke out against administrators at the district and Fire Chief Steve Paulsell.

A paid employee, district Chief of Staff Rob Brown, also was fired after a two-hour closed meeting of the fire district board of directors. Paulsell attended the closed session.

Brown and battalion chiefs Todd Burke and Jerry Jenkins were dismissed from the fire district shortly before noon yesterday, when the closed meeting adjourned.

"I got a call from the fire chief saying I had been released from the fire district," Burke said. "I did not get a reason."

During a July 21 board meeting, Burke and Jenkins took aim at Paulsell and fire district administrators, including Assistant Chief Sharon Curry, the chief's girlfriend, alleging that verbal abuse and other "inappropriate behaviors" are rampant in the department. After that meeting, Burke said he feared retaliation from Paulsell for the comments.

Paulsell said today that Brown
