Firefighters across Michigan are mourning the death of one of their own. 39-year-old Scott Thornton, a third generation firefighter, died in a house fire in Jackson County's Summit Township Thursday morning.

He probably rushed into the burning house to try and save a life. That move cost Captain Scott Thornton his own. His death is hitting some in West Michigan especially hard.

Kentwood's deputy chief knew Thornton as a teenager. Mark Smith says Scott used to hang out with firefighters around the trucks, because Thornton's dad was the chief in Kentwood for 13 years.

Smith says Scott had the job in his blood. He was the only one of the chief's four kids to follow in his father's footsteps, and, Smith says, Thorton's dad won't let his son die in vain.
