GURNEE, Ill. (AP) -- A woman and her 4-year-old daughter died of apparent smoke inhalation in a fire at their home in Gurnee Wednesday, fire department officials said.

The Gurnee Fire Department and the Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office are investigating the cause of the blaze.

Firefighters found the woman in a second-story master bedroom and the child in an adjoining bathroom, the fire department said in a statement.

Both were transported to Provena-St. Therese Medical Center in Waukegan and were pronounced dead shortly after their arrival at the hospital, fire officials said.

Authorities did not release the victims' names.

Fire officials said there were smoke detectors in the home, but it was not immediately known if they were working at the time of the fire.
