Tornado Sparks Massive South Carolina Commercial Fire

Jan. 14, 2005
The storm apparently lifted the roof off the facility and slammed it back down sparking a fire.
The cleanup continues in Laurens County where one confirmed tornado, and possibly a second, left a trail of damage.

There was extensive damage at Laurens High School. As a result, all Laurens District 55 schools are closed today. Duke Power crews have been out in front of the school attempting to restore service to impact areas.

The flames are out, but hot spots are being watched, at TNT Logistics off Highway 221. The storm apparently lifted the roof off the facility and slammed it back down sparking a fire. The plant houses Michelin tires, causing a severe fire. The flames and smoke could be seen miles away, and residents within a half-mile area of the plant were evacuated.

Laurens County dispatchers tell us Metric Road, near the Michelin plant, is a problem area for traffic. Driving is also hazardous on Highway 221 North near Enoree at the border with Spartanburg County.

The Red Cross has set up a shelter at the YMCA at 410 Anderson Drive.
