DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- A 3-year-old girl has died following a house fire that injured her mother and her brother, officials said.

Kimberly Jarnagin was pronounced dead Wednesday night at Blank Children's Hospital. Her brother Jonathon Jarnagin, who is less than a year old, also was taken to the Des Moines hospital for treatment. The children's mother, Angela Marie Ritchie, 29, was transported to Iowa City. Their conditions weren't available on Thursday afternoon.

The fire was reported about 9 p.m. Wednesday by a neighbor who saw flames in the living room window, said Brian O'Keefe, fire department spokesman.

He said several neighbors and bystanders tried to get inside the house, but the doors and windows were locked.

A police officer who arrived on the scene grabbed a garbage can, put it next to the house and broke out a window. The officer then called Ritchie to the window and pulled her out.

Firefighters went inside and found the two children.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
