ENDICOTT, N.Y. (AP) -- A 4-year-old child was killed and a man seriously injured in an early-morning blaze Tuesday that tore through a mobile home.

The fire was reported just after midnight in the town of Union, about 10 miles west of Binghamton.

Nicholas Carl died of asphyxiation due to smoke inhalation, state police said.

David Zimmer, the boyfriend of the child's mother, suffered second- and third-degree burns over much of his body and was hospitalized in serious condition. He tried unsuccessfully to rescue the boy, authorities said.

Tamara Carl, the boy's mother, suffered minor injuries and a 2-year-old girl was not hurt.

Investigators determined the fire started in a kitchen trash can but don't know how.
