Fire damaged an abandoned laundromat and a convenience store in the 1000 block of West Sanford Street on Monday, officials said. No one was injured in the 4 p.m. two-alarm blaze.

Firefighters contained flames at the Quick Wash laundromat to the roof on the west side of the building, but smoke damaged Sanford Groceries, which is in the same building, Battalion Chief Debbie Bradberry said.

It appears that the fire was started accidentally by some men working on a lighted sign on the front of the building, Deputy Fire Marshal Darin Niederhaus said. The men fled the scene, and investigators are trying to locate them for questioning, Niederhaus said.
