A fire that produced smoke visible for miles raced through an apartment complex under construction Monday evening in Las Colinas, causing major damage to the $32 million project.

No injuries were reported in the blaze that took firefighters from several Dallas County cities more than two hours to extinguish.

The fire was reported shortly before 6 p.m. Monday in the 5200 block of North O'Connor Boulevard.

Construction workers were still on some burning buildings when firefighters arrived, but they managed to escape, fire officials said.

Firefighters were expected to remain on the scene throughout the night, authorities said. The fire's cause is under investigation.

The complex, called the Lofts at Las Colinas, was scheduled to open in October with 341 apartments, city officials said.

The blaze destroyed about one-third of the complex including a parking garage, city officials said.
