Fire Chief, Julius "Joe" Cherry To Lead Sacramento

The Sacramento Fire Department is pleased to announce the "Swearing In" Ceremony for its newly appointed Fire Chief, Julius "Joe" Cherry, which will take place on Monday, June 7, 2004, at 11:30 a.m. at the Public Safety Center. Shirley Concilino, the City Clerk, will officially give the oath of office and Chief Cherry will receive the badge as Fire Chief.

Cherry has more than 28 years experience with the Sacramento Fire Department. His fire service career began in 1976 as a Fire Fighter. His strong leadership skills and devotion to the department and community, has helped him promote through the ranks. Cherry was promoted to Captain in 1983, Battalion Chief in 1989, Assistant Chief in 1995, and Deputy Chief in 2003.

Cherry will replace Fire Chief Dennis Smith, who retired May 28, 2004, after 39 years of service to the Department. He will become the 18th Fire Chief to make the rank, in the oldest Fire Department West of the Mississippi River.
