WEST DEPTFORD TWP. -- Verga Fire Co. has appointed an acting chief to take the helm of its beleaguered department following last week's request by the Emergency Services Coordinating Council for the resignation of Verga's top two officials.

Jeff Bilger, a Verga firefighter of 18 years, assumed the role of acting chief Monday. He said the department is expected to receive resignations from Chief John Casciano and Assistant Chief Frank Holzworth during its meeting today.

Bilger said the department would then vote on replacements.
