A fire at a St. Elmo duplex left a 32-year-old woman dead and her child seriously burned Wednesday morning, Chattanooga fire investigators said.

Firefighters pulled the unconscious woman and her 2-year-old son from the brick duplex at 5105 Alabama Ave. shortly after neighbors reported flames surging from the windows, Chattanooga Fire Department spokesman Bruce Garner said.

Mr. Garner said both victims were taken to Erlanger hospital, where the woman was pronounced dead on arrival. The victims
