A young girl has been credited with saving her family from their burning home in Homewood early Wednesday morning.

Five people were inside the home on Oakwood Street when it caught fire, officials told WPXI-TV.

Ten-year-old Tanaiah Ramsey said she could smell the smoke and realized something was wrong.

"I was sleeping and I just smelled smoking and it woke me up and I told my momma," she told the news station.

Her mother, Tavia Ramsey, said the girl alerted the family, grabbed her 2-year-old sister and ran out the back porch as her mother and brother made their way out.

Fire officials said the house was equipped with working smoke detectors.

One firefighter suffered minor burns to his hands and was treated at the scene.

No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
