Firefighters rescued a 58-year-old man Friday after he fell into Nuuanu Stream in Chinatown.

Honolulu Fire Capt. Gary Lum said firefighters were called to Hotel and River streets at 2:26 p.m. after someone fell into the stream.

A bystander jumped into the stream and kept the man's head above the waist-to-chest-high water until firefighters arrived, Lum said.

Firefighters lowered two ladders into the stream and brought the man out within 10 minutes. He had scrapes from falling over the wall and was still unresponsive when firefighters turned him over to paramedics, Lum said.

An Emergency Medical Services supervisor said the 58-year-old man was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
