DINWIDDIE, Va. -- A Ford Volunteer Fire Company fire truck was heavily damaged Friday afternoon when it apparently caught fire and rolled into trees along Cox Road/ U.S. 460.

No injuries were reported after the empty truck somehow rolled forward toward a burning tractor-trailer, catching fire itself.

Dinwiddie County Fire & EMS Chief Dennis Hale said yesterday that they were still piecing together exactly what happened. The Ford Engine Two fire truck, and a tanker from the same fire company, were first on scene to a fully engulfed big rig on 460 not far from the Nottoway County line.

Firefighters got out of the truck and, as they prepared to tackle the blaze, their fire truck rolled forward into the flames and the continued down an embankment.

The fire truck appeared heavily damaged by fire at the rear, and the front cab also appeared damaged by collision. The big rig, meanwhile, was completely charred down to the frame and engine.

Many other fire companies and several wreckers were on scene around 6 p.m. as they towed the fire truck and considered how to clear the big-rig. One lane of 460 was moving slowly with light traffic.
