A Spotsylvania County firefighter who suffered third-degree burns while responding to a house fire near Lake Anna Friday night has been transferred to VCU Medical Center in Richmond.
It's unclear how long it will take for the career firefighter to recover, said Spotsylvania spokeswoman Kathy Smith.
"His release date, recovery period and return-to-work dates have not yet been determined, but he has been up and walking," she said in an email.
The firefighter suffered burns on his upper left arm and shoulder after part of a roof collapsed, trapping him. He was initially taken to Mary Washington Hospital.
A second firefighter injured his hand, but he was released from the hospital on Saturday.
The fire destroyed the home on Waddell Road in Valentine Woods, which is on Lake Anna near the dam west of Partlow.
It appears it was caused by a lightning strike during the massive storm Friday night, but investigators hadn't confirmed that as of Monday afternoon, said Phil Sullivan, a county fire and rescue spokesman.
County fire crews, who answered storm calls all night Friday and into Saturday morning, had to respond to a second house fire a few hours later and six miles away in another Lake Anna neighborhood, Sycamore Shoals.
