OAKLAND, Calif. -- A 57-year-old woman received only moderate injuries after plunging 300 feet down a ravine while driving in the Oakland hills Tuesday night, rescue workers said.
Oakland firefighters were called to the scene on Skyline Boulevard near Melville Lane just after 6 p.m., Battalion Chief Melinda Drayton said. They arrived to find the woman's car had somehow tumbled down the ravine into the western edge of Redwood Regional Park.
The woman, who does not live in California, was the only person inside the car, Drayton said. Firefighters took about an hour to make their way down and extricate her from the car.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was held overnight with moderate injuries. She did not suffer permanent physical trauma and her injuries were not life-threatening, Drayton said.
Police investigators said they believe speed was a factor in the crash.
The car will be towed out of the ravine with a cable, police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said.
