They were researching proteins and amino acids when fumes sickened the teacher and students.

A teacher and three students at Arlington High School were transported to the hospital as a precaution early this afternoon after an accident in an International Baccalaureate science lab.

The district declined to identify the four people, citing privacy rules. It wasn't immediately clear what caused the accident. The Arlington Fire Department is investigating.

AHS biochemistry students were researching proteins and amino acids when fumes sickened the teacher and students, said junior Karen Ortiz, who was in the classroom at the time.

The substance believed to be responsible for sickening them was cyanide, officials said later.

Firefighters were still at the school at 818 W. Park Row as of 2:30 p.m.

"We're still looking into what happened," spokeswoman Leslie Johnston said.

A lane used for picking up and dropping off students in front of the school is blocked off.

Students can be picked up on the east by the gym or the west side by the tennis courts, Johnston said.
