DIXON, Ill. -- A city firefighter was sent to Rockford Memorial Hospital with multiple injuries Monday after falling 12 feet during routine maintenance at the fire station.

Andy Brooks, 47, a firefighter and paramedic who has been with the Dixon Fire Department for 20 years in November, injured his shoulder and head and underwent surgery Monday afternoon, Fire Chief Tim Shipman said.

Brooks was on a hydraulic scissor lift when someone opened one of the overhead garage doors, knocking over the lift.

“The guys were doing station maintenance, light bulbs and windows to clean, just general cleaning, what we normally do,” Shipman said.

Brooks was taken to KSB Hospital, then sent to Rockford, Shipman said, adding that he would classify Brooks’ condition as guarded or critical, although the surgeon was optimistic.

“[The injuries were] bad enough that they sent him up to Rockford,” Shipman said.
