Detroit Firefighters Battle Nearly 30 Suspicious Fires

Sept. 19, 2012
There were 11 fires reported early Wednesday and 18 on Tuesday.

Eleven suspicious fires burned in Detroit between midnight and 6 a.m. today, including a car fire on the city's west side and four fires in an east side neighborhood, according to the Detroit Fire Department.

Those fires are in addition to 18 suspicious blazes in the city on Tuesday, according to fire investigators. The figures do not include fires deemed accidental.

Among today's suspected arson fires were seven structures and three cars, including a green Ford Contour where two people were shot just before 2 a.m. A woman in her 20s was found fatally shot inside the car, Detroit Police Sgt. Alan Quinn said. A man in his 30s ran away and is in critical condition at Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit, police said.

Four homes burned in the area of 7 Mile and Ryan, leading investigators to believe they could be connected.

The most recent fire was burning at 6 a.m. near I-94 and Van Dyke.
