A boy was able to act quickly when his pregnant mother collapsed - because he remembered advice from his favourite programme Fireman Sam.

Liam Robinson, six, knew to call for an ambulance because of lyrics to the Fireman Sam song "get out, stay out, call 999" when Rebecca Forsyth fell unconscious.

Liam even attempted to put her in the recovery position before waiting for the ambulance to arrive.

Ms Forsyth, 29, from Seaham, County Durham, said: "I picked Liam up from school like I usually do.

"I made him a snack and put the television on, and that's the last thing I remember.

"The next thing I knew there was an ambulance arriving and Liam was standing at the door waiting for it."

She added: "He told me I had taken poorly and that he had phoned 999 after climbing the bookshelf to reach the telephone.

"We have always taught him he should ring 999 in an emergency, but he said he knew what to do because of the Fireman Sam song.

"I suppose there was a chance that he might ask for a fire engine to be sent instead of an ambulance."

Ms Forsyth was taken to the Sunderland Royal Infirmary where she was told she was anaemic and had a urinary and chest infection.

She is now at home waiting for her baby girl to arrive with Liam and partner Dean.

Liam will receive a bravery certificate from the North East Ambulance Service.

Ms Forsyth added: "It is amazing what he did - we are just so proud of him."
