LIVERMORE, Calif. -- A firefighter was injured battling a kitchen fire at a single-family home Wednesday, and a resident and three dogs were rescued, authorities said.
The firefighter suffered an injury possibly related to the heat of the fire or exertion as crews put out the blaze in the 6000 block of Corte Encinas, Batallion Chief Joe Testa of the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department said. Crews were called to the scene around 10:52 a.m. and arrived in five minutes to find the fire burning in the kitchen.
Firefighters extinguished the fire quickly, limiting much of the fire damage to the kitchen, but smoke damage was evident throughout the house, Testa said. The estimated damage to the home was $50,000, with an additional $15,000 in damage to its contents, Testa said.
The home's only resident exited the home safely before crews arrived, as did one of the three dogs. The other two were rescued by firefighters. The resident and all three dogs were in good condition.
The Red Cross was dispatched to provide housing assistance for the residents, who rent, Testa said. The owners of the home are out of the country, Testa said.
