SAFER Grant to Rehire 26 Laid-Off Detroit Firefighters

Over the summer, the city received a $22.5M grant to help prevent 108 firefighters from being laid off and this grant will help rehire the remaining firefighters who were let go in August.

Detroit plans to rehire 26 laid-off firefighters using a $5.6-million Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant, the city announced today.

According to a news release, the grant covers two years of salaries and benefits for firefighters who were laid off in August. The grant comes from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Over the summer, FEMA awarded Detroit a $22.5-million grant through the SAFER program that helped prevent 108 firefighters from being laid off.

"I am extremely pleased to accept a second SAFER grant on behalf of the city and the people of Detroit," Mayor Dave Bing is quoted saying in the news release.

"Public safety is and absolutely must be our top priority, and this grant allows us to get firefighters who were recently sidelined back on the job protecting Detroit neighborhoods."
