Firefighters with the Central Coventry Fire District have been working without pay as their department searches for ways to meet payroll.

The fire district's 52 firefighters have worked without pay for one week and are now entering their second, according to The Providence Journal.

"We're here, and if an alarm comes in, we'll be responding," Fire Union President Capt. David Gorman told the newspaper.

"How long this can go on, that's the million-dollar question. At some point, we will have to make a decision whether to come to work or not."

Fire Chief Andrew Baynes said that the fire district is currently investigating the possibility of going into receivership.
