Arson was ruled as the cause of each of two residential fires that burned in Toledo Tuesday, authorities said.

A firefighter, whose name was not released, was injured at one of the fires and was treated at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center for minor burns, said Toledo fire Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld. He did not say whether the injured firefighter was allowed to return to work.

The victim was injured while helping fight a blaze at a vacant duplex at 417 Parker Ave. near Starr Avenue and East Broadway Street in East Toledo, Lieutenant Hertzfeld said.

Fire crews arrived about 12:30 a.m. and saw heavy flames coming from the two-story wood frame structure. They attacked the flames and brought them under control in about 30 minutes but not before it damaged a house next door at 421 Parker, the lieutenant said.

Damage from the fire was put at about $40,000, Lieutenant Hertzfeld said. The fire was ruled as intentionally set, with the exact cause remaining under investigation, he said.

The Lucas County auditor's Web site lists Kevin Moore as the owner of the duplex, which is in foreclosure, according to the Web site. It was built in 1908.

Later in the morning, fire crews were called to the fire at a vacant house at 287 Knower St. in Toledo's Old South End. There were no injures in that fire, Lieutenant Hertzfeld said.

Firefighters got to the scene about 4:06 a.m. and found flames throughout the 1 1/2-story wood frame house, the fire lieutenant said. They brought the fire under control in about 25 minutes, he said.

The fire was also ruled as intentionally set, the fire lieutenant said. The exact cause was under investigation and the fire damage was estimated at $12,000.

Deborah Oliver is listed as the owner of the house, according to the auditor's Web site. The house was built in 1914.
