Two Kansas City, Kan., firefighters suffered minor injuries while fighting a vacant house fire late Sunday in Bonner Springs.

Firefighters responded to the blaze about 11:50 p.m. in the 400 block of North 118th Street in Bonner Springs.

Arriving crews were told that the house, which was fully involved in fire, was vacant. Because the one-story house was unstable and collapsing in on itself, firefighters took a defensive mode in fighting the blaze.

An additional pumper was dispatched to help prevent the fire from spreading into a wooded area.

The property owner arrived and told Kansas City firefighters that the house had a Bonner Springs address. The Bonner Springs Fire Department responded to investigate the cause of the fire.

One firefighter suffered injuries when struck on the neck by falling debris. The other firefighter suffered a knee injury while picking up a fire hose during the cleanup.

Both firefighters were taken to a hospital, where they were evaluated and released.

The fire caused an estimated $45,000 in damages to the house.
