OAKLAND, Calif. -- A vacant home was destroyed and a firefighter slightly injured Monday morning in one of two East Oakland house fires, officials said.

The vacant, boarded-up house in the 2200 block of High Street was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on scene at 2:20 a.m.

Batallion Fire Chief Melinda Drayton said a paramedic crew passing by had phoned in the fire.

It took 22 firefighters until 3:10 a.m. to control the fire. One firefighter suffered a minor injury to his leg and was treated and released at a hospital.

Drayton said the fire was obviously suspicious and she placed damage in excess of $250,000.

Earlier, about 1:40 a.m. a fire was reported at a single-story house in the 1200 block of 100th Avenue.

Smoke was coming from the house when firefighters arrived on scene.

The fire was under control in about 20 minutes and firefighters remained on the scene longer to make sure no hot spots ignited. Officials said no one was displaced and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
