One student was taken to Cooper University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Six students and a teacher were taken to hospitals Monday after a fire erupted during a classroom science experiment at Eastern Regional High School in Voorhees.

Officials did not release information on the conditions of the seven, but Voorhees Police Chief Louis Bordi said one student was taken to Cooper University Hospital for treatment of "more serious injuries."

The teacher and other students were taken to nearby Virtua Voorhees, he told reporters.

Bordi described the blaze as a "fireball."

"I can't say exactly how it happened," he told reporters.

In a two-sentence statement on its website, the Eastern Camden County Regional School District said the seven had been taken to hospitals "for medical treatment and for precautionary reasons."

The fire was reported just before 1 p.m., officials said. The nature of the experiment and why it erupted in flames were not disclosed.

The school has about 2,200 students from Voorhees, Gibbsboro, and Berlin Borough.
