Dec. 14--TERRE HAUTE -- A man rescued Wednesday from atop a grain bin has died as a result of having a medical emergency.
Firefighters were dispatched to Gavilon Grain on South Third Street around 1:30 p.m. on a report of a person in cardiac arrest. Terre Haute Fire Department medics responded to the scene and treated the patient, but temporarily had no way to get the man lowered to the ground.
Sugar Creek Firefighters responded with their technical rescue team to conduct a high-angle rope rescue.
"The only way to get him from the top of the grain bin to ground level was by lowering him to the platform ladder truck," said Darrick Scott, chief of Sugar Creek Fire.
The technical rescue team made a pulley system to lower the patient, secured in a Stokes basket, about 20 feet to the awaiting ladder platform, which was extended about 105 feet. The man was then transported by ambulance to an area hospital before he was pronounced dead.
