Dec. 31--COLUMBIA -- Deputies arrested a Tuolumne City man on arson and other charges after he allegedly broke into a business at Columbia State Historic State Park and lit a Christmas tree on fire. The blaze spread, causing major damage to the building.

Authorities said the fire was reported at 6:23 p.m. Tuolumne County Sheriff's deputies also responded to the scene, as witnesses reported a man causing a disturbance and lighting something on fire.

The fire quickly spread to the building, formerly known as the Columbia House and more recently as Jenny Lind restaurant.

According to the sheriff's department, witnesses at the scene pointed out Daenon Vincent Brewer and identified him as the suspect.

Deputies contacted Brewer, who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and controlled substances, authorities said. Deputies determined that Brewer had forced entry to the front door of the restaurant and lit a Christmas tree on fire.

A damage estimate is not yet available. Deputies arrested Brewer on charges of arson, burglary, probation violation, being drunk in public and possession of marijuana.

New Year's Eve festivities planned at the building are being relocated to the Douglass Hotel.

We'll have more on this story from reporter John Holland later today.
