Jan. 04--Firefighters will live in recreational vehicles during a renovation project at Santa Fe's Fire Station 4, located near the intersection of Arroyo Chamiso Road and St. Michael's Drive.

Lockwood Construction began work just after Thanksgiving and expects to complete the $1.2 million project by late April.

The southeast-side fire station, the city's smallest, was built about 40 years ago, Assistant Fire Chief Jan Synder said.

While firefighters will be housed in recreational vehicles parked at the station during most of the construction period, the fire engine and ambulance at the station will remain in the station's garage when they're not in use, Snyder said.

The city planned to house firefighters in a mobile home instead of the camping trailers, but the state Construction Industries Division rejected that idea because the fire station land is not zoned for commercial structures, Synder said.
