Jan. 09--YORK -- York County firefighters were called to a vacant lot on Bay Tree Beach Road in Seaford Wednesday afternoon after someone found what appeared to be military ordnance on the beach along the Chesapeake Bay.

A passerby walking in the 1000 block of Bay Tree Beach Road called firefighters around 12:30 p.m. to report possible ordnance that appeared to have washed up from the bay.

York Fire Capt. Paul Long said firefighters determined the device was not actual ordnance but rather spent shells from military ordnance. Long said it was unclear how long the shells may have been there. An explosive ordnance disposal team from Naval Weapons Station Yorktown responded to the area to remove the shells.

This is the second time in two months firefighters have responded to Bay Tree Beach Road for a report of ordnance. Firefighters were called to the area Nov. 2 after a suspicious device was spotted. The item was later determined to be training or dummy ordnance.

Long didn't know why the objects are washing up in that area. He noted that the devices are washing up after the area rivers and bay were churned up from Hurricane Sandy.
