Jan. 14--NEW HAVEN -- Firefighter Aaron Brantley was arrested on an attempted bribery charges after turning himself in at police headquarters today.
Brantley was released shortly after 12:30 p.m. He is free on $20,000 bail. He is charged with two counts of bribery of a witness, police spokesman Officer David Hartman said.
A source familiar with the matter said the arrest is in relation to a pending discrimination case that Brantley filed with the state Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities. The case recently was scheduled for mandatory mediation in April.
Brantley walked out of police headquarters with his lawyer Hugh Keefe and Lt. James Kottage, who is the fire union president. Kottage made no public comment other than that he was there to support Brantley.
Keefe said that he believes the case is very thin from a prosecution standpoint.
"He is an outstanding firefighter and he has received many commendations over the years," Keefe said.
