Jan. 16--HAMPTON -- Five families were displaced following an early Wednesday morning apartment fire.

Firefighters were called at 12:30 a.m. to the intersection of Tudor Court and Salisbury Way in King Street Commons apartments, said Capt. Jeff Pereira, a spokesman for Hampton Fire and Rescue. When crews arrived they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the first and second floor of the apartment building, Pereira said. He said the fire had also spread to the attic.

The majority of the of the residents evacuated the building on their own. However, one person was helped from their apartment by residents and another was assisted by firefighters, Pereira said.

Eight apartments were damaged in the blaze.

Nine adults and four children are being assisted by the Red Cross, Pereira said.
