Jan. 24--A house fire likely ignited by a heater sent a Covington resident and four volunteer firefighters to hospitals.

Covington Volunteer Fire Department spokesman David Crosier said crews responded to a call at the 400 block of Royal Avenue today shortly after 4 p.m.

Crews found the resident injured as a result of the fire. Crosier said the blaze was likely ignited by a heater that caught fire. The resident suffered burns to his face and hands and was transported to LewisGale Hospital Alleghany.

Four of the department's volunteer firefighters were also taken to hospitals because of the fire, Crosier said. One was airlifted to LewisGale Medical Center in Salem, and others were taken to the local hospital with minor injuries.

The house, Crosier said, is likely a total loss.

He said it is the seventh structure fire that crews in Alleghany County have battled in January, a high number for the area.
