A fire that broke out on the Coast Guard Cutter Bear was confined to the damage control shop, a maintenance area for crew members.

March 01--PORTSMOUTH -- City and Coast Guard crews battled a blaze aboard the cutter Bear on Thursday afternoon. No injuries were reported.

Portsmouth fire crews were sent about noon to the base where the Bear was moored, according to fire officials. They joined crews from the Bear, the cutter Forward and the Coast Guard base who worked to extinguish the blaze, which was out before 1 p.m., Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class David Weydert said.

The fire was contained to the damage control shop, a maintenance area for crew members, Weydert said.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

The 270-foot medium-endurance cutter returned in early December from a two-month counterdrug patrol in the Caribbean Sea.
